How to Safely Remove Snow and Ice from your Roof

Wednesday, November 14th, 2018 by Lindsey Pierce

Winter is quickly approaching here in New England. Having a substantial amount of snow accumulating on your roof can cause more damage in the future. The longer the snow stays on your roof, the higher your home is at risk for a collapsed roof or water damage inside your home. It is important to make sure you, as a homeowner, can safely remove the snow and ice from your roof.

Calling a professional to remove the snow from your roof would be your safest bet, but if you prefer to do it yourself, here are some tips to make it easier and safer for you:

  • Don't use any sharp tools to remove the snow as it can damage the shingles. Instead, opt for a plastic snow rake.
  • Start by removing the snow from the edges then work your way towards the middle of the roof.
  • Be aware of any items on the roof (such as vent pipes, skylights, etc) that can get buried under the snow. Carefully remove the snow around these items.
  • Be prepared that the snow may fall back onto you so it is important to leave a great enough distance and make sure you are on the outside of the sliding range of the snow.
